Various computerized instruments and procedures are used to evaluate your eyes for disease.

The optic nerve, blood vessels and other internal structures of the eye are evaluated to check for retinal problems and evidence of systemic disease such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

A biomicroscope is used to check for cataracts. Various other tests include the glaucoma check and a visual field evaluation (peripheral vision test).

Vision Testing

Your ability to see clearly at different distances will be tested to determine a proper prescription for glasses and or contact lenses. It includes the measurement of a visual acuity, and a computerized assisted measurement of your refractive error. Your specific visual problems and needs are taken into consideration before the final correction is determined.

Common Eye Problems

Myopia: Myopia is nearsightedness and occurs when the cornea is shaped too steeply or the eye is too long. Light in the eye is focused at a point in front of the retina instead of on the retina. A myopic eye can see near objects more clearly than distance objects.

Hyperopia: Hyperopia is farsightedness and occurs when the light entering the eye is focused beyond the retina. A farsighted eye can see distant objects more clearly than near objects, though neither is in crisp focus. This condition worsens after the age of 40.

Astigmatism: Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea that has more than one curvature (like a football as opposed to a basketball). These multiple curvatures cause light rays to scatter within the eye and not focus on any single point -- resulting in blurred vision.

Presbyopia: Presbyopia is a condition, which usually occurs after the age of forty, when the muscles of the eye are no longer able to focus easily to be able to see at near. Reading glasses or bifocals are usually prescribed to solve this condition.
