Laser LASIK Refractive Surgery

Our office evaluates and co-manages the surgical correction of vision by Laser and LASIK.

During LASIK, a thin flap of corneal tissue is created with a device called a microkeratome. The surgeon will then gently fold back the flap.

Using the excimer laser, precisely remove the proper amount of corneal tissue.

How much tissue removed is determined by the number of pulses and the size and shape of the laser beam, as controlled by the laser's computer. Next, the thin flap of the corneal tissue is folded back to its original position; the natural physiology of the cornea holds the flap in place until the healing occurs, usually within several hours.

Because the results of LASIK are more rapid and more dramatic than with any other refractive procedure, patients routinely resume their normal activities within 1 to 2 days.

Important Facts

In general, patients will see as well after LASIK as they did before with their glasses and contact lenses.

  • Most LASIK patients experience a 95% improvement in their vision by the next day and are pain free.
  • LASIK is performed on an out-patient basis and is generally completed within minutes.
  • Most patients are able to return to work the following day.
  • LASIK has been used since 1990 throughout the world.
  • People over 40 years of age who have their distance vision improved may find they need reading glasses after their procedure.
  • We can provide patients with more information and discuss it with them at the consultation.
